alone but not lonely

Its 2019 and we live in the most high tech, fast paced world in history. We’ve become accustomed to filling the eeriness of silence with fluff. We turn to distractions to of escaping feelings of idleness or boredom. Endless scrolling on instagram, clicking mindlessly through Netflix or Youtube to find something to numb out with. But the main thing we wish to elude is loneliness. But heres the thing my friend…. aloneness does not have to alienating or lonesome. In fact, aloneness and loneliness are distinctly separate.

We tend to fill loneliness with all types of distractions. Some people would rather spend a Friday night on a date with a person they have no genuine interest in, than spend the night alone. They’re literally killing time while they await the one they actually want. All they are doing is filling the space where they could be learning to be comfortable alone with a fruitless activity. And like the great RuPaul says, if you cant love yourself, how the hell are you gonna love somebody else? You have to fall in love with being alone! You have to love yourself so much that you are your own favorite companion and then, believe me, the one you’re seeking will find you. You’ll become a magnet.

Don’t be spooked by the unfamiliarity of silence. Silence can be an amazing thing. It teaches you how to truly listen. It teaches you to pay attention to whats going on inside of you. Only when we are alone, can we have the space and peace we need to get to know ourselves. Fall in love with being alone. Stare aloneness in the face and make friends with it, you’ll be amazed at what follows.
